Hot take: My MLS Cup Memories

Some people have "The Drive", some "The Immaculate Reception." I have the incredible f*ck up. On December 6th, Facebook told me that I had some memories with many friends to look back on. December 6th, 2015 is a day that I will never forget. My hometown Columbus Crew SC had made MLS Cup and were hosting defying all odds, and they would be playing the Portland Timbers. The Crew were in search of their second title, while the Timbers were pursuing their first. The day began just like any other, I woke up as eager as I had ever been for a Crew match and I quickly hurried over to a friend's house.

We quickly got some pizzas and headed down to Mapfre stadium. It is what happened next is something that I would like to, but will never forget for the rest of my life. The game that I had been so eagerly anticipating for so long was essentially over in 27 seconds when Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark mishandled a ball and Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri quickly hammered the opportunity home for a 1-0 lead. Saying that the Crew faithful and I were stunned would be an absolute understatement. I had never heard the stadium that quiet before in my life.

We could hear the Timbers Army clear as a bell on the other side of the stadium. And then all bedlam broke loose as Nordecke rained beer down on Rodney Wallace, Nat Borchers and the rest of the Timbers as they scored a goal on a ball that was clearly out of bounds and wasn't called by the AR Corey Parker. Regardless, the day quickly spiraled out of control for us and we could never recover, losing 2-1 to the Timbers. They were the better team that day, and they deserved to win as we could never really get things rolling.

Sadness aside, this brings me to the 2016 final. I'm looking at you Toronto and Seattle. The first thing I was to say is have fun! You never know when your going to get back to this point. Granted, with stars like Jordan Morris, Clint Dempsey, Giovinco, Altidore, and Bradley the future looks bright for both clubs. Learn a lot about the other teams supporter culture, I can't tell you how many friends I have in Portland after MLS cup. Still remains to be seen when this article goes live though.

Trade scarves after the match, your boys are going to battle hard and probably swap shirts. You should probably get a scarf from the opposing fans. When is the next time you two are going to lock up? Seriously. Lastly, enjoy the moment, and take lots of pictures. This will be a memory that will stay with you forever regardless of the outcome. Hopefully, you will be gifted with better memories though.
