It's July 1st and you know what that means. I want to be the first to wish you a Happy Bobby Bonilla Day!
What is Bobby Bonilla Day you may ask? It occurs every July 1 as now 59-year-old Bobby Bonilla collects a payout on his contract from the New York Mets. The former third baseman collects $1,193,248.20 annually until 2035.
How did this happen?
The Mets decided to buy out Bonilla's contract in 2000 which saw him scheduled to make another $5.9 million. Instead of paying him all at once, the team opted to make annual payments of $1.2 million dollars for 25 years and those payments began on July 1, 2011, while accruing 8% interest. Bonilla will continue to receive money until he turns 72. This got me thinking, what other crazy contracts exist?
No horsing around...
Baltimore Orioles second basemen Rougned Odor has gone on the record stating that he has a fondness for horses. Odor grew up with the animals and actually had six of them at his home in Venezuela.
Prior to signing his contract extension with the Texas Rangers in 2017, Odor was offered two horses in addition to his near $50-million dollar pay raise as a result of his new contract.
Lacy losing weight...
Former Alabama and NFL running back Eddie Lacy has struggled with weight during his time in the NFL. Stories often circulated that the running back's weight fluctuated, sometimes reaching an astounding 267 lbs during offseason workouts. To combat this problem the Seattle Seahawks laid out some incentives in his contract to make sure that the running back remained in fighting shape.
Lacy could earn a potential $385,000 by losing 10 pounds between May and September. The Seahawks also scheduled seven weigh-ins and each time the running back hit 255 lbs he was rewarded with a $55,000 bonus.
Do you know of any crazy contracts? Let me know!
